    HOSPITALITY MINISTRY

    Sacred Heart - Ushers

    Contact:  Ted Kammer - 219-733-1519

    • Five to six ushers are needed per Mass (4 regular & 2 substitutes).  Have a short meeting after each Mass to discuss changes.
    • Greet the people until a priest or deacon is ready to greet.
    • When seating a disabled person, offer to move any walking aid to the back of the church and return it to them after Mass.  Ask if they would like the Eucharistic Minister to bring them Communion and inform the Sacristan of their need.
    • Two ushers should seat people in the 15 minutes prior to Mass.  Two ushers remain in the last benches in church to seat late arrivals and assist anyone leaving during Mass due to an emergency.  The back pews may need to be reserved so the ushers can sit with their families.
    • General Assistance:  Help anyone having a problem while in church.  For example, check on a person spending an unusually long period of time in the hall or the restroom, or assist children in need of guidance.
    • Gift Bearers should be instructed to walk, not rush, up the aisle.  Presentation order to the celebrant is: 1) Collection; 2) Wine; 3) Hosts.
    • After Mass, the church area should be cleared of any trash on the floor and any books on the pews should be placed back in the racks

    Safety Information

Be aware of any trained medical personnel (doctors, nurses, paramedics, firefighters) and where they are seated in church.

Do not allow people to sit on chairs in the back of church if pews are available.  Keep the back of church free of chairs (except for special events and overflow crowds).  Extra chairs could be stacked in the vestry room.

The Sacristy door is available for exit during an emergency.  In an evacuation of the church, two ushers in the center or front of the church could direct people to use that exit.

Know the location of fire extinguishers.  There should be one extinguisher at each entrance (front and back).  Know where to get to a phone, if needed.

Call 911 to contact fire, police, or ambulance assistance.  Have the address of the church available to give to emergency services.
