Gabriel Project
The Gabriel Project is a very effective parish program that reaches out to women with unplanned pregnancies to help them choose life and avoid abortion! The project is already being practiced in several hundred Catholic and Protestant churches across America. Our Catholic Community has been partnered with this project since April 2007 as part of the Great Lakes Gabriel Project. Since October 2006 over forty Catholic churches in Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan have become GLGP. The spirit of The Gabriel Project started in March of 1973 when the Bishop of Houston challenged his pastors to reach out to the women who were having abortions. The pastor of St. Michael's church in Houston put a large sign on the church property, which told pregnant women who needed help that this church would assist them. The actual Gabriel Project started in the 90's and has provided a welcome refuge to many women who felt they had no other place to turn. Some of these women had considered abortion as their only alternative. The concept is simple, we have announced to the community that any woman who is pregnant and in need may come to the church to seek assistance. Our main communication is through our "Sign of Life" provided by our Knights of Columbus Council that is placed near Hwy 30 at the Sacred Heart Road. This "Sign of Life" offers a toll-free number to reach assistance 1-877-719-7012. Women are also referred to the project by other ministries, pregnancy resource centers and through social service agencies. During 2005, the GLGP helped over 130 women. The young project at our Catholic Community is still although yearning to help a mother and family! Items have been donated, our statement has been proclaimed and many prayers have been lifted; we are ready to help! Our work until we encounter a needy mother, has been to donate baby items to local Birth Rite and assistance centers. Over $4,000 of items were donated to mothers through that route!
